ACCA Taxation (TX) is unique among ACCA papers in that Kenyan students sit a Kenya-specific variant — covering tax law administered by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). This makes TX one of the most directly applicable papers in the entire qualification. At Upskill Ltd, TX is a paper where Mr. Javan Wasike's students consistently perform above the global average. This guide gives you everything you need to pass.
Global Pass Rate: ~53% (March 2026)
Why the Kenya Variant Matters
While most ACCA papers are globally standardised, TX allows countries to develop a local variant tested on their own tax legislation. The Kenya TX variant is set by ACCA in partnership with local tax experts and covers Kenyan statute as administered by the KRA. This means everything you learn is directly applicable to your work as an accountant, auditor, or finance professional in Kenya — making TX one of the most practically valuable papers you will sit.
Exam Format
- Section A: 15 objective test questions — 2 marks each (30 marks)
- Section B: 3 case-based questions with 5 sub-parts — 30 marks total
- Section C: 2 constructed response questions — 20 marks each (40 marks)
Key Syllabus Areas — Kenya Variant
- A — Kenya Tax System: Sources of revenue law, KRA structure, tax collection mechanisms, and taxpayer obligations
- B — Income Tax for Individuals: Employment income, benefits in kind, rental income, sole trader and partnership taxation
- C — Income Tax for Companies: Corporation tax computation, capital allowances (wear and tear), investment deductions, withholding tax
- D — Value Added Tax (VAT): Registration, output and input VAT, VAT returns, exempt and zero-rated supplies
- E — Capital Gains Tax: Computation of CGT on property and securities disposals in Kenya
- F — Tax Administration: Filing deadlines, instalment tax, penalties, objections, and appeals
Most Tested Topics
What appears in almost every sitting: Employment income computation (including benefits in kind), corporation tax calculations with capital allowances, VAT computations, and tax administration (deadlines and penalties). Section C typically includes one individual income tax question and one corporation tax question. Expect CGT to appear in Section A or B.
5 Common TX Mistakes to Avoid
- Missing KRA deadlines in administration questions. Filing deadlines for individuals, companies, and VAT returns are different — memorise them precisely. The examiner tests these directly.
- Forgetting to deduct personal relief. In individual income tax computations, personal relief (currently KSh 28,800 per year) must be deducted from tax payable — not from taxable income.
- Confusing wear and tear allowances with investment deductions. These are separate capital allowance mechanisms in Kenya with different rates and conditions. Do not conflate them.
- Applying wrong VAT treatment to exempt vs zero-rated supplies. Exempt supplies do not allow recovery of input VAT. Zero-rated supplies do. This distinction generates marks in every sitting.
- Not staying current on KRA rates. Tax rates and thresholds change with each Finance Act. Always study from materials updated for the current examination year.
How TX Differs From Other Applied Skills Papers
TX is generally regarded as more manageable than PM or FR because the computations, while detailed, follow defined rules. If you learn the rules and practise applying them to scenarios, the marks are there to earn. The challenge is precision — a small error in a tax computation can cascade through to an incorrect final figure, losing multiple marks for one initial mistake.
Upskill Ltd advantage: Mr. Javan Wasike teaches the Kenya TX variant with specific focus on KRA legislation and current Finance Act updates. Students at Upskill Ltd work with Kenyan tax scenarios drawn from real business contexts — not generic global examples.
Study Strategy for TX
- Start with the basics: Master the personal income tax computation from scratch before moving to corporate tax.
- Learn rates and thresholds by heart: PAYE bands, corporation tax rate, VAT rate, instalment tax deadlines — these cannot be looked up in the exam.
- Practice past papers in order: TX past papers for the Kenya variant are available on the ACCA website. Work through them chronologically to track examiner trends.
- Time your Section C answers: Each 20-mark question should take no more than 36 minutes. Practice under timed conditions from week six onwards.
