ACCA Advanced Performance Management (APM) is the most demanding of the optional Strategic Professional papers — and the one with the lowest global pass rate. APM requires strategic thinking at the highest level, the ability to design and evaluate sophisticated performance management systems, and the professional judgment to advise senior management on complex organisational performance issues. At Upskill Ltd, Mr. Javan Wasike teaches APM with the depth and advisory focus this paper demands.
Global Pass Rate: ~40–41% (Dec 2025 to Mar 2026)
Who Should Choose APM?
APM is best suited to students pursuing careers in senior management accounting, management consulting, or strategic finance roles. It builds on PM and extends performance management thinking to organisational strategy, environmental and social performance, and the use of advanced data analytics in business decision-making. If you are interested in how organisations measure, evaluate, and improve performance at the most senior level — APM is your paper.
Exam Format
- Section A: One 50-mark compulsory question — an integrated strategic performance management scenario requiring advisory-style responses
- Section B: Two questions of 25 marks each — choose two from three, covering specific APM frameworks, current developments, or detailed performance analysis
- Total: 100 marks over 3 hours 15 minutes
Key Syllabus Areas
- A — Strategic Planning and Control: Mission, vision, goals, strategic planning process, CSFs and KPIs, management control systems
- B — Performance Measurement Systems: Balanced Scorecard (advanced application), Building Block model, performance pyramids, value chain analysis, benchmarking
- C — Performance and Reporting: Integrated Reporting, sustainability reporting, environmental and social KPIs, non-financial performance measurement
- D — Divisional Performance and Transfer Pricing: Divisional structures, ROI, RI, EVA, advanced transfer pricing scenarios
- E — External Considerations: Stakeholder analysis, PESTEL in performance context, risk and uncertainty in performance management
- F — Current Issues: Data analytics and big data in performance management, AI in management accounting, beyond budgeting, rolling forecasts
Most Tested Topics
What the APM examiner consistently focuses on: Balanced Scorecard applied to specific scenarios (including not-for-profit and public sector), divisional performance measurement (EVA vs RI vs ROI comparisons), integrated and sustainability reporting, data analytics in performance management, and stakeholder analysis linked to KPI design. The Section A compulsory question is always advisory and scenario-specific.
5 APM Mistakes That Prevent Passing
- Applying frameworks mechanically. Writing out all four Balanced Scorecard perspectives in generic terms earns almost nothing. You must apply each perspective specifically to the organisation in the question, with relevant KPIs justified by the scenario.
- Ignoring the strategic context. APM questions are set in a strategic environment. Every performance management recommendation must be linked to the organisation's strategy, not evaluated in isolation.
- Overlooking sustainability and integrated reporting. IFRS S1/S2, IR frameworks, and environmental/social KPIs appear in APM questions regularly. Candidates who have not prepared for these topics lose Section B marks.
- Providing descriptive rather than evaluative answers. APM rewards evaluation: weighing options, identifying trade-offs, making justified recommendations. 'The Balanced Scorecard has four perspectives' describes. 'The learning and growth perspective is most critical for this organisation because…' evaluates.
- Poor time management in the 3h 15m paper. Section A should take 90 minutes. Each Section B question should take approximately 35–40 minutes. Practise under timed conditions from the start of revision.
