How to Pass ACCA AFM Advanced Financial Management in Kenya — Expert Guide

By Mr. Javan Wasike, Upskill Ltd  |  June 2026  |  8 min read

ACCA Advanced Financial Management (AFM) is the highest-level corporate finance paper in the ACCA qualification. It extends FM into complex M&A valuations, sophisticated treasury management, advanced risk management, and strategic financing decisions. AFM is numerically intensive, analytically demanding, and widely regarded as one of the most challenging papers in the entire qualification. At Upskill Ltd, Mr. Javan Wasike teaches AFM with the precision and depth this paper requires.

Global Pass Rate: ~44–45% (Dec 2025 to Mar 2026)

Who Should Choose AFM?

AFM is best suited to students pursuing careers in corporate finance, treasury management, investment banking, private equity, or senior financial management roles at large organisations. If you enjoy the quantitative and strategic aspects of FM and want to work at the highest levels of financial decision-making — AFM is the right optional paper for you.

Exam Format

  • Section A: One 50-mark compulsory question — typically a complex M&A, treasury, or strategic investment appraisal scenario
  • Section B: Two questions of 25 marks each — choose two from three, covering specific AFM technical areas
  • Total: 100 marks over 3 hours 15 minutes

Key Syllabus Areas

  • A — Role and Responsibilities of the Senior Financial Executive: Financial strategy, stakeholder management, financial objectives, treasury management function
  • B — Advanced Investment Appraisal: Complex NPV (real options, adjusted present value), international investment appraisal (APV with WACC adjustments), project finance
  • C — Acquisitions and Mergers: Valuation methods (DCF, P/E, dividend-based, asset-based), synergy assessment, acquisition structuring (cash vs shares), defence strategies, post-merger integration
  • D — Corporate Reconstruction and Re-organisation: Business restructuring, MBOs, demergers, divestments, financial distress
  • E — Treasury and Advanced Risk Management: Currency risk (forwards, futures, options, swaps, money market), interest rate risk (FRAs, futures, options, swaps), value at risk (VaR), commodity risk
  • F — Emerging Issues: Fintech, Islamic finance, environmental finance, ethical dimensions of financial management

Most Tested Topics

What appears in almost every AFM sitting: Business valuation using multiple methods with recommendation, M&A analysis (synergies, deal structure, EPS effect), currency hedging (comparing all four methods), interest rate risk management (swaps and options in particular), and adjusted present value (APV) for international investment. Budgeting at least 200 hours of preparation for AFM is strongly advised.

5 AFM Mistakes That Cost Students the Paper

  1. Attempting AFM without deeply knowing FM. AFM extends every FM calculation type. If you are not comfortable with WACC, NPV with taxation, and FX hedging from FM, revise those first. AFM adds complexity on top — it does not replace the fundamentals.
  2. Using the wrong valuation method. In M&A scenarios, the examiner often requires multiple valuation methods with a recommendation on which is most appropriate. Simply calculating one method and ignoring others loses marks. Always justify your recommended approach.
  3. Weak narrative on strategic recommendations. AFM Section A questions often require a discussion of strategic implications alongside calculations. 'The NPV is positive therefore accept' is not a Section A answer. Discuss strategic fit, risk, financing implications, and integration challenges.
  4. Getting APV wrong. Adjusted Present Value = base case NPV (all equity financed) + PV of financing side effects. Students often add the tax shield incorrectly or use the wrong discount rate for the base case. Practise APV calculations repeatedly.
  5. Poor time management. AFM calculations are long. Section A (50 marks, ~90 minutes) must be completed efficiently. If a sub-question is not working, move on — partial marks are available and returning later is better than losing all Section B time.
