One of the most common questions from prospective ACCA students in Kenya is: how long will it take me to finish? The honest answer is: it depends on how many papers you sit per sitting, whether you have any exemptions, and whether you pass consistently on the first attempt. This guide gives you a realistic breakdown for different types of students in Kenya.
ACCA has 13 papers in total: 3 Applied Knowledge papers, 6 Applied Skills papers, and 4 Strategic Professional papers. ACCA holds four exam sittings per year: March, June, September, and December. The maximum number of papers you can sit in any one sitting is four.
A student who sits four papers per sitting, passes all on the first attempt, and has no exemptions could theoretically complete all papers in five sittings — approximately 18 months. This assumes a full-time student with no work commitments and zero exam failures. It is extremely rare to complete ACCA this quickly.
Total: approximately 3 to 3.5 years, assuming a solid first-attempt pass rate.
Students with very demanding work schedules should expect to take 4 to 5 years. Slower but entirely valid — passing one paper at a time consistently is far better than rushing and accumulating resits.
Full-time students can realistically complete ACCA in 2 to 2.5 years sitting 2–3 papers per sitting with good first-attempt pass rates.
If you hold a relevant accounting degree or have completed CPA Kenya papers, you may qualify for exemptions from Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills papers. Each exemption directly shortens your completion time.
